Lock up your website content!

A friend alerted me to the existence of this handy piece of software today. It’s called Copyscape

Copyscape is a product of Indigo Stream Technologies Ltd, a private company co-founded by Gideon Greenspan. Copyscape is dedicated to protecting your valuable content online. They claim to provide the world’s most powerful and most popular online plagiarism detection solution, ranked #1 by independent tests. Website owners worldwide check the originality of their new content, prevent duplicate content and search for copies of existing content online.

Recently I’ve heard of bloggers having their content stolen. It hasn’t happened to me yet, so having this tool should mean that I will be able to track down the perpetrator if in fact it does happen.

Have you ever had your content stolen? How did it make you feel? Have you used Copyscape? If you have used it, was it a positive outcome?

These are a couple of stories from the Copyscape website. Yes I did copy them, however in this instance I am giving much more than taking.

As one of Germany’s leading companies for website-content our business is based on delivering unique content. We integrated the Copyscape API into our CMS and as a consequence our copywriters get instant feedback if their texts are really unique. We and our customers really appreciate the technology!

This site is awesome. We have now caught two people who have copied the entire content of our corporate site. It is unbelievable how stupid some people can be… but without Copyscape we wouldn’t have been able to find them. Thanks for the great site!

  1. Hi John,

Great to see someone covering such an important topic.

Yes I’ve had copy stolen and it’s not a nice feeling.
Just a couple of weeks ago I used Copyscape and found a guy who had taken almost an entire blog post from my business site. I made the decision to feel sorry for him rather than act on it.
Then the very same guy came back and opted into my auto-responder (most likely looking for what else he could take), so I promptly deleted him!

If you are creating content, Copyscape is a must have tool in your arsenal.

  2. Great Information, John!

When you consider all of the people and businesses online engaged solely in the exchange or the selling of Information Products, plagiarism can be devastating.

For the preservation of their primary source of revenue, Copyscape sounds like a remedy, both to their “bottom line” as well as their credibility.

I haven’t tried Copyscape yet… but I’m off to try in now!

  5. Who knew?
Well, we all knew, but who knew one could do something about it?!
When “works and plays well with others” stops working, it’s nice to have a back up!

Thanks for giving such a clear look at this!

  6. John,
I just learned about Copyscape recently as well, and went right over to the site to see if anyone had lifted any of my blog’s content. Thankfully, no one has! But plagiarism on the Internet is rampant, so it pays to know about resources like Copyscape so that we can keep tabs on what is going on with our original content. Thanks for putting up this important post and informing your readers of how Copyscape can help them!

  7. Thanks for bringing that info to my attention, I had recently heard of a couple of colleagues who had their content stolen in it’s entirety.
I will pass on your post, thanks John

  8. Hi John, thanks for the information. I’ve used Copyscape in the past and it does work well. Copy and pasting is so easy, I guess people find it difficult to resist the temptation!

    Hey John,
Great info about a solution to the age-old issue of plagiarism. Too bad people cannot see that using someone’s copy is fine as long as you give credit where credit is due. I appreciate this great tip!

  11. John,

I didn’t even think of this. This is some very valuable information and I appreciate you sharing this with us!

  12. I had no idea about this problem even existing, let alone addressing the issue.

Thanks for the info, I plan to look into it soon, you never know when someone is lurking around your content.

    Thanks a bunch
